Usually when music artists get older they turn to the American Songbook and do covers of the age-old favorties, but on “Standard Candles,” Patrick Ames, a veteran songwriter in his 60s, turns the tables and writes seven new standards for the modern era. Then, like most artists, he couldn’t leave well-enough alone and added his contemporary lyrics. The result: classics that are, well, modern. Ames delights in the sound. And he plays with it to his advantage to push the lyrical storytelling.

You Can’t Hurt Me Anymore -
by Patrick Ames 2016 All rights reserved.
You can’t hit me / you can’t kick me
You can’t hurt me / anymore
I don't live through / those Dark depressions
In my head now / anymore
You can’t hurt me, Anymore
I don't hear you / I don’t see you
I don't think of you / anymore
I don’t have those / kind of breakdowns
I don’t shut down / Anymore
I don’t shut down
Anymore. Anymore. Anymore. Anymore.
All you want to do is come down on me
Somehow that makes your day complete
But I’m not going to play those games
I’m not going to co-pit-u-late
There’s other ways to die than under your smile
There’s other ways to live than to live like liars
I’m no longer going to participate
And live in your house, your house of hate
Anymore. Anymore. Anymore. Anymore.
extra
You can’t bruise me / you can’t use me
you can’t confuse me / anymore
I won’t go through / those self confessions
I won’t back down / anymore
F - E. You can’t hurt me
Am C. D. F Anymore. Anymore. Anymore. Anymore.
